Neuromuscular Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is no longer just for front teeth. Those old silver fillings that have made your back teeth dark and unattractive can now be replaced with state-of-the-art materials that will make your teeth stronger, healthier and much more attractive.

Benefits Beyond Beauty
Dentistry may be the only profession that continues to rely on a material and technique that are more than 100 years old. Amalgams (silver fillings) have continued to be the primary choice of many dentists for posterior restorations because of their relative low cost, ease of use and predictability during chewing. These reasons do not mean that amalgam is the finest material available nor that it is the best for your dental health.

Strength
The degree that amalgam expands and contracts differs significantly from your natural tooth structure, this will cause stress cracks and fractures over time and allows microleakage of fluids and bacteria in and around the filling edges. Amalgams do not provide any strength, but instead weaken your teeth by simply filling a space left from decay removal. Therefore, your tooth supports the filling.

Unlike amalgam, bonded restorations reinforce tooth structure and increase "intercuspal" strength. They have been shown to restore 80% to 90% of the original tooth strength.

Biocompatible
Mercury is classified as hazardous waste material under OSHA guidelines. Interestingly, it has been declared safe when placed or stored in your teeth!

Conservative
Bonded restorations are inherently conservative in nature. Preparation of the tooth does not follow the historical G.V. Black methods, which are from the turn of the century (late 1800's). Direct bonded restorations require the removal of only the existing filling and any decay.
